Last Friday was a great night for literature and music in Athens. Avid was packed for the latest installment of New Town Revue, and the lineup was fantastic.
Thibault Raoult, a newcomer to Athens (via the UGA creative writing PhD), started us off with some recent poems that were quite engaging. He recently came out with a chapbook, “Communist Couplets.” Check it out next time you’re in Avid.
Next, Kara Kildare of Kill-Kill Buffalo took the stage and belted out a song like only she can. We here at New Town Revue knew she was lethal with the piano, and were happy to see she’s just as comfortable accompanying herself with the guitar.
Next came UGA professor of comp lit Ari Lieberman, who read the first chapter of his recently completed novel. Before the reading, he confided his fear that he was not a very good reader. But from the first sentence, he had us all hanging on his every word, effortlessly blending humor with pathos. At the end of the evening, i heard quite a few folks requesting more chapters. The novel isn’t yet published, but judging by what we heard, it soon will be.
Since we like to run thing “revue style,” Kara Kildare came back up after Ari and wowed us with two more beautiful songs, one old and one new. And the evening ended with Thibault reading (and singing!) a few final poems.
All in all it was a diverse night that once again humbled us with the amount of talent that walks among us here in the Classic City. Hope to see you at the next New Town Revue, October 11.
